And the View from the Shore: Literary Traditions of Hawaii
Published in Hardcover by University of Washington Press (July, 1991)
Author: Stephen H. Sumida
Average review score:

Still an indispensable guide to lieratures of Hawai'i.
This far reaching study, the first of its kind, is still an indispendable guide to the literatures of Hawai'i and required reading as such. The pathos and commitment of the book still come across, over the years and the distances of island separation and diaspora in Michigan. Read it on the beach or in your study.

The Attack on Pearl Harbor: An Illustrated History
Published in Paperback by Navigator Publishing (October, 1999)
Authors: Larry Kimmett and Margaret Regis
Average review score:

A great general reference to the attack on Pearl Harbor
Larry Kimmett and Margaret Regis book "The Attack on Pearl Harbor" is an excellent source of information and photos about the Japanese attack on the United States Pacific Fleet on Dec 7, 1941. This book is full of specific details about almost all of the people, equipment, and major leaders who were involved in this battle. It is easy to follow and is well written. While not a lengthy read (about 120 pages), it is packed full of relevant and specific stories from topics a varied as the Japanese special attack force, through the destruction of the Battleship Row, to the present day memorials to the USS Arizona and USS Utah. It is easy to recommend this book to anyone interested in what was one of the darkest days in American history.

Auntie (Little Rainbow Series)
Published in Hardcover by Island Heritage Publishing (01 December, 1998)
Authors: Stephany Indie and Diane Kraul
Average review score:

Fun to read
Auntie was Stephany Indie's signature story as a story teller in Hawaii and on the mainland. As her sister, I heard it told many times and each time it was a delight! Auntie captures a story size bite of Hawaii, and the illustrations are like a quick tour. Auntie is so full of life, it will be enjoyed by children and adults, and by anyone who can be touched by Aloha!

Baedeker's Hawaii (Baedeker's Travel Guides)
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (July, 1999)
Authors: Fodor's and Baedekers
Average review score:

Excellent choice
We bought 3-4 different books about Hawaii before moving there, this one was our favorite. After living in Honolulu for 3 years, we still used this book often and found it to be quite accurate and helpful. We used it when visiting Kauai, and Hawaii ("The Big Island"), and were happy with the advice and recommendations.

The suggested tours were good, directions and maps were accurate and easy to use. The restaurant recommendations left a bit to be desired, they leave out many cheaper alternatives (though the suggested restaurants are fine, and other choices are easy to find once you're there). The beach section is great, and gives directions of some great "out of the way" beaches much quieter than Waikiki and offer (plus shows some beautiful color photos!).

We've loaned this book to many friends preparing to visit HI, and they have liked it as well.

Baedeker's Seychelles
Published in Paperback by Baedekers Guides (November, 1992)
Authors: Eckard Supp and Jarrold Baedeker
Average review score:

A very good armchair tour of the Seychelles Islands
Lots of color photos distinguish this travel guide. Especially useful is an A-Z tour of all the significant islands, including at least one color photo for most of them.

The Best of Hawaii
Published in Hardcover by Gault Millau (November, 1994)
Authors: Alain Gayot, Gault Millau (Firm), Andre Gayot, and Gault Millau
Average review score:

Thorough, accurate, yet not overwhelming.
My wife and I used this book to plan our honeymoon to Hawaii. We stayed at one of the hotels Gayot's recommended, and it was better than described. This book is extremely accurate yet a little conservative, so you won't be disappointed by reality. The restaurant section is excellent. This is a superior guide without all the filler of other guide books.

Best Places to Stay in Hawaii
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (October, 1993)
Authors: Bill Jamison and Cheryl Alters Jamison
Average review score:

An EXCELLENT Resource for Planning a PERFECT Hawaii Vacation
I just got this book and I was so impressed with the writer's straight-forward style that I felt like an old friend was suggesting the best places to stay in Hawaii. It is honest and detailed and a must-have book for planners who want to make the most of their stay in Paradise.

Grant categorizes the many B&Bs, resorts, inns, condos etc. according different travellers' tastes and needs. Each island has her recommendations for "Best Romantic Hideaways," "Best Resorts for Wordly Elegance," "Best Family Resorts," "Best Resort Values," etc.

Based on her description and pictures we saw on the web, we are confident we have found exactly what we are looking for on the three islands that we want to visit on our honeymoon.

I can't say enough about it! If you are going to Hawaii and you don't want a cookie-cutter-travel-agent-planned vacation, but you still want value for your money, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Birds in Jeopardy: The Imperiled and Extinct Birds of the United States and Canada, Including Hawaii and Puerto Rico
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (April, 1992)
Authors: Paul R. Ehrlich, David S. Dobkin, and Darryl Wheye
Average review score:

Very Informative!
Reading the sections on the extinct birds is quite distrubing since has an acute sense of frustration that they are in fact gone forever and cannot be braught back to life. This book in question, i.e., Birds in Jeopardy : The Imperiled and Extinct Birds of the United States and Canada by Paul R. Ehrlich, et al, is a good reminder that we have a huge responsibility towards other species in other surrounding enviroment and we have the obligation to keep the list of extinct animals from growing since loosing more species would indeed be quite devestating. Highly Recomended.

Great Book.
This is a great book. If you like Sidney Sheldon, Jefferey Archer, or maybe even Elizabeth Gage you will love this book. I could swear this is based on a actual incident but I may be mistaken. None the less. Plan for a good long read, You won't want to put it down.
